And package deals with airfare and lodging combinations are definitely a good way to keep costs down. Looking for a good deal? Check the Sunday Travel section of any large U.S. city newspaper and you will discover some very competitive rates. Documentation to visit Cancun is either a valid passport, or a proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate and a photo I.D., or a notarized affidavit. You will also need a Tourist Card which the airline will provide, which is good for 180 days. And while you are at it, don't forget to leave at home any guns, ammo or drugs (no, not even a couple of joints) on the airplane, they are all illegal in Mexico. If you do there is a good chance you will miss those beautiful beaches and that warm Caribbean water in Cancun. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is approximately 10 miles southwest of the main tourist areas. It is a good airport in very good condition, and it is a busy place! Flights arrive and depart at this airport from all around the world! Once you get off of your airplane you will be directed to Immigration. Here is where you provide your proof of citizenship (Passport or certified birth certificate and a photo I.D.). After you pick up your luggage at the baggage carousel you will head towards the exit, via the Customs stop. You will hand the nice woman your Customs Declaration form (completed on the plane before you landed!) and then press the GO / STOP Customs lottery button. If you win you get to have a Customs official filter through your baggage looking for guns, drugs, or fruit. Assuming you have none of the above, it's time to head for your hotel! Taxis and colectivos from the airport to the Hotel Zone usually run around $10 per person. Be patient while they try to fill up the vans with as many people as they can. A private cab may cost you a bit more but will get you to your hotel and into the Caribbean as soon as possible! GENERAL AVIATION ... also has its place in Cancun. Back to Top of Page BUS INFORMATION Buses in Cancun are used primarily to get from the hotels to the major tourist destinations south of town. The road that heads south from Cancun is called the Cancun - Tulum Highway, and connect Cancun with many exciting destinations. AUTOTUR and TURICAN are the two main bus companies that service the Hotel Zone and Cancun City. They stop at all of the hotels on the island approximately every 15 minutes. The fare is very reasonable. Look for the buses that say Centero or Tulum Avenue on the front. For trips to Playa del Carmen, Merida and Chetumal bus transportation is available by AUTOBUSES DEL CARIBE and by A.D.O. (first class service). These buses depart from the bus terminal in downtown Cancun on Tulum Avenue. Back to Top of Page CAR RENTAL INFORMATION Although it is possible to get off the airplane at the Cancun Airport and rent a car, chances are you will get a much better rate if you reserve a car in advance. Usually the more in advance you make a reservation, the better the rate is. When you get to the airport and discover that the type of car you reserved is not available, don't get excited. That's the way things often work here, just do the best you can with whatever types of cars are available. Keep in mind that some of the larger car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Dollar, and Hertz are not usually run by their U.S. counterparts, although they do have some affiliation. If you have problems the U.S. offices will usually help honor your contract terms as a way of keeping peace. Also don't be surprised if your reservation and confirmation number draw looks of concern form the cute Mexican / Mayan girl behind the car rental counter. Again, this is the way it happens sometimes, but everything usually works out in the end. Bringing along a copy of the reservation papers will certainly help get you back on the right path. Insurance...that's your next question. Your auto insurance back at home will not cover you here. Chances are good that you will not become involved in an accident for the short time you are in Cancun. But remember, in Mexico if you are in an accident you considered quilty until proven innocent, and insurance will keep you out of jail and on the beach in case you do need it. To get from the airport to the Hotel Zone expect to pay something close to $10.00 U.S., and about the same to get from the airport to downtown Cancun. If you are staying in the Hotel Zone and want to venture into downtown Cancun, a cab ride will cost you about $5.00 to $8.00, depending on how far your particular hotel is from downtown.
