CANCUN FISHING
Beaches put Cancun on the map, but fishing keeps 'em coming back! There's a whole lotta fishin' going on in the waters off of Cancun! For the most part the waters off of Cancun are relatively calm most of the time. Hurricane season runs from July through late October, but even then the waters are pretty calm unless a storm system is active. Most of the storm systems in the eastern Caribbean only last a day or two. Unlike other fishing destinations in Mexico such as Cabo San Lucas or Mazatlan, most of the fishing in Cancun is done on cruisers, not pangas. These fishing boats usually hold at least 4 fisherpeople (ladies included!) and most depart from the marinas in the lagoon and then out to the open sea. Shore fishing is not common in the waters off of Cancun. The beaches are very developed with hotels and tourist facilities, and are relatively shallow. So getting well offshore is usually the skipper's first goal. Catch and Release is gaining in popularity in Cancun. Although nobody is going to bust your chops if you want to bring a big one on board, releasing the fish you don't need is a great way to ensure good fishing in Cancun for years to come. Be sure to tell your captain what your plans are regarding catch and release before he gets out the gaff! If you're going to be out on a boat for hours under the blazing tropical sun it might not be a bad idea to review our SUNSCREEN TIPS section. For a review of Earth water temperatures, including the Cancun area, check out this color map of OCEAN TEMPERATURES. Fishermen from the United States are keeping a close eye on Mexico's plan to create a NAUTICAL LADDER along the shores of Mexico's Sea of Cortez and Pacific Coast. After a successful fishing trip to Cancun you may be on the lookout for another good Mexico fishing destination. If you haven't had the opportunity to fish in CABO SAN LUCAS you might want to talk to your travel agent when you get home! Tight lines and hook-ups are the name of the game at this Cape destination.
