CANCUN ROAD TRIPS
Yes indeed, it can be hard to garner the energy needed to leave Cancun in search of greener pastures. Much of what is fun and good about the Yucatan Peninsula is right there in and around Cancun. However there are some great road trips that are well worth the effort.

AKUMAL
What: Beachside paradise.
Drive Time: Approximately one hour each way.
Road Surface: All paved.
Carlos' Comments: An easy road trip. The way Cancun used to be before the crowds. Rent a kayak in the main bay or snorkel in the north lagoon!

BELIZE
What: Mexico's neighboring country to the south.
Drive Time: Approximately 4 hours each way.
Road surface: All paved.
Carlos' Comments: You'll need to grab Belizian car insurance at the border. The country is beautiful, but don't plan on spending much time in Belize City.

CUBA
What: Mexico's neighboring country to the northeast.
Flying Time: Approximately 1 hour each way.
Regular flights from Cancun airport.
Carlos' Comments: Okay, so it's not a road trip. But this is the best excusrion Carlos has ever taken. When you arrive in Cuba don't have them stamp your passport. This trip is against the law, but so is turning right at a red light in Chicago.

CHICHEN-ITZA
What: Mexico's most popular Mayan ruin.
Drive Time: Approximately 3 hours each way.
Road surface: All paved.
Carlos' Comments: Lots to see at this amazing site. Hire a guide who can help you more fully understand it all.

XCALEK
What: The Yucatan's southernmost city.
Drive Time: Approximately 3 hours each way.
Road surface: Mostly paved, some dirt roads.
Carlos' Comments: A real outback adventure. It is possible to hire a boat in town to scoot over to beautiful Ambergris Cay in Belize, a 30 minute ride.
