ISLA CONTOY
With the spectacular growth of Cancun over the last 25 years you might think that development has engulfed every corner or real estate anywhere near Cancun Island. And you wouldn't be too far from correct. But the masses have not yet discovered one little secret island just northeast of Cancun, Isla Contoy. Isla Contoy is an undeveloped island that is very much the way it was before Cancun was discovered. The Mexican government has a bird refuge on the island and other wild animals also exist peacefully on the island. The island itself offers no services or facilities. But it does offer a prestine jungled interior, crystal clear waters, abundant offshore sealife, and plenty of birds. Access to the island is very limited and there are sevral companies in Cancun that provide tours. These tours are generally half day excursions and not very expensive. Things to bring on a Contoy adventure include sunscreen, a hat, mask and snorkel and a camera. Many tours to the island include lunch as part of the package. After a few days on Cancun many visitors wonder if there is a place where unspoiled nature can be enjoyed. Isla Contoy is such a place, and it is less than a half hour boat ride from the docks of Cancun!
