Also known as Cancun City, the nine block square downtown Cancun area offers more much affordable lodging than the hotels on the Island, yet they are no more than 10 to 15 minutes away from the splendid beaches in Cancun Island's Hotel Zone.
Many of the downtown hotels provide a "beach club" connection where a van will pick up and drop off guests at one of the Island's better beaches. Taking a quick taxi ride to the Hotel Zone beaches is another alternative!
Cancun City is connected to Cancun Island via Kulkucan Boulevard, which connects to downtown at Coba Avenue. One block after entering Cancun City the cross street of Tulum Avenue is the 'main drag' downtown. This is a busy place and seems quite removed from the slower pace of Cancun Island.
When obtaining room quotes for Cancun be sure to ask if all taxes are included in the rate. Sometimes the room rate per night is quoted with taxes and sometimes without taxes...be sure to ask.
