The waters off of Cancun are excellent for scuba diving! Water temperatures are usually in the upper 70's and 80's, and visibility is usually great! Whether you prefer snorkeling or SCUBA diving, exploring the underwater world of Mexico's Caribbean is always a great adventure. If you have the time, try to take a dive excursion over to the island of COZUMEL. It's a short plane hop from Cancun (or you can drive south and catch the ferry at Playa del Carmen), and the drift diving there is nothing short of spectacular! The fifth largest reef in the world, the Belizean Reef, starts just offshore from Cancun and extends over 250 km. south to the Bay of Honduras. This barrier reef is loaded with coral, sea life and spectacular underwater caves. This reef can be accessed at many points along the Mayan Riviera south of Cancun. Fun places to dive in the Cancun area include Punta Nizac, Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy, and Akumal. There are also several places in the shallow channel between Cancun and Isla Mujeres that are good for diving and checking out the local shark population. Another type of diving is CENOTE diving. There are many Cenotes south of Cancun that offer fun diving. These calm fresh water diving holes are unique to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and a great place for beginning divers and snorkelers.
