CANCUN CAR RENTALS
Renting a car during your stay in Cancun is an option, but not a necessity. As a matter of fact, most visitors to Cancun do not rent a car. Taxis are a great way to get around the island, and they are everywhere in Cancun.
Travelers with a sense of adventure might consider renting a car for a portion of their stay, maybe a day or two. Sometimes just having a car for a day for a short period will give a visitor the freedom they need to take that road trip south along the jungled highway.
Although it is possible to get off the airplane at the Cancun Airport and rent a car without a reservation, chances are you will get a much better rate if you reserve a car in advance. Usually the more in advance you make a reservation, the better the rate is.
Car rentals are also available at most hotels in Cancun and can often be rented at the last minute without a reservation. The daily rate for renting a carat the last minute in the hotel lobby might be higher that the rate would have been if a reservation was made in advance, but hey...it's only money.
When you get to the airport and discover that the type of car you reserved is not available, don't get excited. That's the way things often work here, just do the best you can with whatever types of cars are available. Keep in mind that some of the larger car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Dollar, and Hertz are not usually run by their U.S. counterparts, although they do have some affiliation. If you have problems the U.S. offices will usually help honor your contract terms as a way of keeping peace.
Have a reservation and the nice guy behind the counter can't seem to find it? Don't be surprised if your reservation and confirmation number draw looks of concern from the cute Mexican / Mayan girl behind the car rental counter. Again, this is the way it happens sometimes, but everything usually works out in the end. Bringing along a copy of the reservation papers will certainly help get you back on the right path.
Insurance...that's your next question. Your auto insurance back at home will not cover you here. Chances are good that you will not become involved in an accident for the short time you are in Cancun. But remember, in Mexico if you are in an accident you considered quilty until proven innocent, and insurance will keep you out of jail and on the beach in case you do need it.
The main road that runs south from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and Tulum is Highway 307. This highway is in good condition, but can get a lot of traffic all week long. Just take it slow and you shouldn't have any problems. If you must drive at night drive slower.
